England 2015 Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony

The Rugby World Cup is the greatest prize in rugby and one of the most admired competitions having established itself as one of the most important sporting events behind the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and the FIFA World Cup. In 2015 the 8th Rugby World Cup is hosted by England with the opening game at Twickenham.

Titanium Fireworks were delighted to work with Donaldson Creative to deliver the roof pyrotechnics for the Opening Ceremony held at Twickenham on Friday 18th September. The immense challenge with the opening ceremony is that it is held on the pitch just minutes before the opening game. The entire cast and props have to removed from the field of play within 15 minutes to allow the opening game between England and Fiji to commence.

The ceremony itself lasted approximately 15 minutes where we fired 4 cues from the roof of the stadium over the field of play to enhance and compliment the creative narrative within the ceremony, from the reveal of the ball, to the celebration of the 20 rugby legends, the reveal of the Webb Ellis Trophy and finally the finale to the ceremony with the reveal of the flags of the two competing nations in the opening Game.

Similar to the many ceremonies we have now been involved with, including the London 2012 Olympics and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games our creative team and experienced working at height pyrotechnicians delivered another opening ceremony under challenging conditions, not least the torrential rain for the load in. It was also great to see and work with some familiar faces from London 2012 Ceremonies again. We were privileged to be involved in another high profile sporting ceremony such as the Rugby World Cup and get the chance to witness the opening game, one of the perks of the job.
