FACTS AND STATS – EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY 2015/2016

  • Celebrating its 23rd Anniversary this year, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay was first produced by Unique Events, on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, in
  • Over 100 bands have performed at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay including Texas, Madness, Kasabian featuring a surprise guest appearance from Noel Gallagher, Moby, Primal Scream, Simple Minds, the Pet Shop Boys, Lily Allen and this year’s headliner Biffy Clyro (making their second appearance at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay).

  • Over 3 million revellers have enjoyed the Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party over the last 23 years.
  • 2015/16 Concert in the Gardens features an all Scottish line-up of Biffy Clyro, Idlewild and Honeyblood. Tickets for Concert in the Gardens sold out in 10 days.
  • This year10,000 people will carry a torch in the Torchlight Procession, led by 26 Up Helly Aa’ Vikings from Shetland and 6 pipe bands with over 100 pipers and drummers and local fire performers. Over 30,000 spectators are expected to enjoy the Procession and the spectacular finale of a fireworks and light display viewed from Calton Hill and the surrounding streets.
  • 75,000 revellers will join hands to sing the world’s largest Auld Lang Syne at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party on New Year’s Eve, which will be broadcast on screens throughout the Street Party arena. Already tickets for the celebrations have been purchased from over 80 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Kuwait, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Panama, Slovakia, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey.
  • 16 acts will perform across seven stages at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens and The Old Town Ceilidh. 4,000 people are expected to birl through the bells at The Old Town Ceilidh, taking place for the first time on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile.
  • 2016 Dancers will be taking part in an attempt to smash the Guinness World Record for the Largest Strip the Willow at 11.00pm on 31st December in the Old Town Ceilidh.
  • There will be 4 firework displays on 31st December – countdown fireworks from Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens at 9.00pm, 10.00pm and 11.00pm followed by the spectacular midnight fireworks, which will lift from Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street Gardens and Calton Hill.

  • BBC News 24, Sky News, ITN, STV and BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay Show will all be broadcasting live from the Street Party. Live pictures will be beamed to a potential audience of over a billion people in 150 countries around the world.
  • Travel bloggers will be visiting Edinburgh from as far afield as China, USA, Australia, Canada, France and Germany as well as across the UK and closer to home as part of the Edinburgh’s Blogmanay Since 2012, on Twitter alone #blogmanay content has reached 18 million people with 225 million impressions, generating over 46,000 tweets.
  • 1,200 people will splash into the chilly waters of the Forth in the shadow of the iconic Forth Bridge at the 30th Anniversary Stoats Loony Dook on New Year’s Day watched by over 3,000

  • Scot:Lands will welcome performers from around Scotland to 11 atmospheric (and secret) venues in the Old Town on New Year’s Day in a packed programme of free events.

Tickets were bought from 64 countries

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2015/16 is a key part of Scotland’s tourism calendar, and generates £42million in economic benefit for Edinburgh with around 150,000 people coming to the city for the three day celebrations.
